The Vomitones featuring the Vomettes was formed due to a lack of good live music being available to play at Chelsea's in Coeur d'Alene in 1980.Les Fairchild took over management of the small club in January of 1980 and started offering live music. One weekend, when there was no good music available to play, Les came up with the idea to put together a multi-genre band to fill in. He asked two female friends (Ruth Wagner & Lindsey Ryder) to be back-up singers and hired Craig Hill and a drummer to be the backing band.
After a few rehearsals, The Vomitones, featuring The Vomettes, wowed the sold out crowd at Chelsea's with a high energy show where they performed three different acts: easy listening/pop music, country western & hard rock & roll. The show was such a success that the bar patrons took out an advertisement in the local paper asking that the Vomitones & Vomettes be brought back.
In 1981 a new improved Vomitones show was put on. For this show Ruth returned with Lauren Sands as her fellow Vomette. This time a five piece band was hired to back them up. The first act had Les playing Nick Rails, "schmarmy" lounge lizard. Next he became Buck Balls, country & western singer and finally Rock Slash, rock god. The Vomettes also morphed into the appropriate back-up singers for each set. The show's finale featured original Vomette Lindsey joining them on stage.
