BRIAN & THE LIARS was always a fun band, playing rock & roll rhythm & blues. The band recorded many songs. They got good radio and video airplay with original songs...TOO LATE... SHE'LL TAKE ROMANCE... ONE MORE CHANCE... I NEED HELP... BRIGHT DAY... WHEN SHE COMES TO ME... ETC. They performed on the BLUE WAVE label. Song writers: Alan Hovden, Peter Sinclair, and Brian Holden.Brian Holden, December 2003
What a great project! Thanks!I was a founding member and original keyboardist, saxophonist and vocalist of Brian and the Liars. Original promo picture you have of the band is taken in a derelict building that stood the now trendy area in Vancouver called Granville Island. I am second from the left with the drummer Jimmy Powell at the far left and Jim Elliott at the far right.
I joined the band at the urging of my good friend and guitar player the late Kenny Pierce with whom I had played in numerous projects from 1979-1986. We originally met when I was hired to play in the Kenny McColl Band. We reformed as Radio (with Mike Kasper bassist formerly of Hit and Run and Nick Doktor drummer formerly of Crosstown Bus) after Kenny McColl decided take a hiatus from the music biz. After Radio fizzled Kenny and I played a brief stint as a duo called Prime Time.
It was then I decided to finish my teaching degree at the University of British Columbia and continue what I had started out to be when I was 15 years old, and that was a high school music teacher. Meanwhile, Kenny and I still played some gigs together and then he hooked up with Brian, Jim and Jimmy and soon after asked me to join. The deal was that I would get them through the first spring- summer of gigs but they had to find a replacement by August as I had a contract as a teacher for September. They found Bruce Nessel who is an excellent player and the rest is history.
I continued on to teach and found time to do session and demo work in the Vancouver area as a keyboardist, sax player and vocalist as well as a writer of numerous sound tracks for jingles, television, videos and movies.
