Comments: Regarding Chuck and Mary's message: You are spot-on about Prince Paul and the Serfs. I remember them playing at UPS on several occaisions (I also think I caught the at the Red Carpet several times. They were really good and always seemed to be having one hell of a time when they played. Dug their "uni's" too. Sort of a Paul Revere & the Raiders meets The Kinks style, I recall. Also great to hear several members are still making music. There was another group out of Centralia at about the same time who had a really good sound. This band I can't seem to tap into the memory banks to come up with a name, but they played at UPS also and were one of the first NW groups I saw that was experimenting with direct reverb on their mics. If anybody can come with the name, I'm sure some others might be interested as to their whereabouts. They're not listed in the site which, by the way, is fantastic! Sam is definitely no sham! Comments: My brother, Chuck, and neighbor,Norman McVeigh,Started playing rockabilly music together in 1954 and by early 1955 had formed the nucleus of a band called the Rhythm Rockets. This group led by myself, the youngest member. We introduced quite a few other young players to the joys of a teenage band. We gigged alot as my parents were very supportive. We played the 4th of july celebration in Brownville,Washington,(mine and my brothers hometown), on top of the newly built firehall in 1956 and also the kitsap county fair that same year.Lee Parker of the Sharps, also of Kitsap county, was in attendance that day at the fair and I got him up to sing . I let him play my guitar and the people loved him. He has since told me that it was a pivotal moment in his life. I left the area in Dec. 1959 with touring uso show for the far east, and didn't get back till Aug. 1967. The USA and the music scene had changed alot in those eight years so we didn't try to put it back together at that time. The other two original members and myself, get together once a week and play 50ies music now. If you are interested in having the Rhythm Rockets listed, I have pictures and such and a list of people who passed through it.Sunday 12/16/2001 10:32:42am

Comments: Prince Paul and the Serfs! Unbelievable! My wife and I met at one of their gigs in Tacoma. Incrdibly entertaining and could really deliver a good time. Understood they did a "Toga" event somewhere dressed in the Roman garb and brought the house down. Caught their act later at the Uof Dub's Las Vegas Night with Mel Torme (Of all people). They kicked ass! Wish somebody would supply some photos, etc. We always told our kids and friends about these guys. Good to know somebody else remembers. They could really put on a show. Did You Have A 1954-1979 NW Band?: Yes
Comments: Web guy-- coolest website I've ever been to. Fabulous. My name is Timothy Ford. I graduated from Eisenhower high school in Yakima in 1968. In the summers, I worked for Mac Keith of KJR & Associates in the Seattle area off and on from 1965 until 1967. Mac promoted "dances" throughout the Northwest from about 1964-ish through until the end of the "dance" era, when rock festivals and concerts took over. We worked the Target Ballroom, a city park in Kent, the Avalon on Aurora which later became something else, a place in Bellevue, etc. Later (1966-is) Mac brought bands to Eastern Washington. At the Seattle area gigs, he Sonics played regularly, as did George Washington and the Cherry Bombs, Don & the Goodtimes and certain bands from outside the PNW, like the Wailers (Out Of Our Tree)--definitely not the Bob Marley band.
I lived in Seattle during those summers and in Yakima during the school year. Whenever Mac promoted a dance in Yakima during the fall/winter/spring, he would call me. I usually took tickets or counted the patrons with a clicker.
The Kingsmen and Paul Revere were too big for these gigs.
I was the all-purpose tech/roadie/gofer of the Gentlemen Wilde and the manager for another band called the Lost Souls (not the one from Victoria). Both were from Yakima.
I vaguely remember someone telling us about the other Lost Souls.
The Yakima Lost Souls were together from about 1965 or 6 to 1968. The lead singer was Al Fearon; Rick Norgard played lead guitar; Vernon Palm played drums; Bradley Leroy Eliason played bass on Epiphone??, McCartney-style. Randy Knowles played rhythm guitar. We traveled to our gigs in a 1954 Pontiac hearse, white and grey on the outside and blood red felt in the back.
These Lost Souls were the dominant dance band in Yakima and the Yakima Valley, after the Gentle Wilde disbanded. We played at least one gig a week, usually more. We usually split the door 50-50 with promoter. We played almost weekly at the Yakima YMCA. The door usually was good for about 250 to 500 dollars, at $1 a crack to get in.
Don (Galucci) & the Goodtimes were very influential with all the local dance bands, as of course were the Kingsmen, the Sonics and Paul Revere--and of course Danny & the Seniors. Later, in 1969, Tiny Tony and the Statics had changed his band name to International Brick and gigged a lot in Eastern Washington.
In Eastern Washington it was a big event when Merilee Rush was the headliner and that was before "Angel orf the Morning." The Lost Souls practiced at Vernon Palm's parents house on South 34 or 35th. He was the next door neighbor of Frank Monaco, the drummer for the Gentlemen Wilde. Both bands played quite a few Dave Green tunes. Everybody played Long Green, Money, Little Latin Lupe Lu, Louie Louie, etc. The Gentlemen Wild had an orignal song that got some airplay, even though they never cut a single, called "Baby Huey." It was a take-off on "Jolly Green Giant." It went:
Six foot nine and 245
he's the biggest baby alive
oh don't get mad
Baby Huey
don't get mad at me
oh no oh no
don't get mad at me
The bass player for the Gentlemen Wilde, Chris Norgard, was the older brother of the Lost Souls' lead guitarist Rik. Chris was nearly killed in a car crash in the early 1970's and Rik died in a car crash in Renton in 1973 or so.
(Dan) Kim Thomas of the Gentlemen Wilde was my best friend when I was a sophomore in high school. He wrote several good ballady songs.
Joe Coffman also wrote a bit.
Jim Selzler, the lead singer of the GW, is still famous for being the toughest guy in Yakima.
The Gentlemen Wilde played a Danny & the Seniors song called Sandy. During that whole time, doing the "gator" was illegal, I guess, because it was too suggestive. There was almost no interaction with the Latino and black kids at our gigs. We were almost all from Eisenhower, Yakima's all-white school. (Joe Coffman went to Selah high and was the same age as Frank Monaco; they graduated in 1966, a year before Jim Selzler and Chris Norgard and two years before Daniel Kim Thomas.
The Lost Souls were more consistently employed than the Gentlemen Wilde were. The Lost Souls were a bit more bubble gum, playing 3-4 Monkees tunes (I Wanna Be Free, Last Train to Clarksville, ???). The Gentlemen Wilde never wore outfits, as far as I can recall; the Lost Souls wore turquoise velveteen Paul Revere outfits, complete with ruffles and tri-corner hats. Both bands played "Kicks" and several other Paul Revere hits, but the outfits the Lost Souls wore were more like the uniform of some bands rather than a tribute.
Both bands did "steps," because the crowd expected it, but they were always a bit embarrassed by the clumsy guitar swinging. Every local band I ever heard in that era played "(Come on, Baby) Let the Goodtimes Roll." Like almost every band at the time in the area, the Gentlemen Wilde and the Lost Souls used Fender amps--Bassmans for the bass and
Showmans for the guitars.
Al Fearon, Randy Knowles and Rik Norgard graduated from Eisenhower in 1967; Vernon Palm in 1969. Brad Eliason was much younger and went to Davis High, I believe. Al was an actor who went to college to study drama; I'll find out what happened to Randy Knowles and Vernon Palm. As I said, Rik died very young.
It seemed like every band from that era played this joke-song:
See that girl in the big red truck
She can't drive but she sure can...shift.
The Lost Souls also played some Association, Trogs, Them, etc. Everybody played Gloria and most played She's Not There. Wooly Bully. 96 Tears. The Kinks got covered a lot. Guys waited for The House of the Rising Sun to ask girls to dance because it was so slow and long. Rik really dug the Yardbirds so the band played some of that.
Al Fearon's big showstopper (besides I Wanna Be Free) was Eleanor Rigby.
As I said, the Lost Souls regularly made good money. At the height in 1967, we would average $300 a gig, a lot for the times. I usually got ten percent and the band split the rest. Vernon Palm's dad didn't want the band to pay me. I think he figured he should be getting the money as the band practiced at his house.
Vernon Palm was the heartthrob of the band. Rik was a @#%$! good guitar player. Randy sang and played consistently well. Brad was the most artistically ambitious, but couldn't sing much. He sang "Act Naturally" a la Ringo, which was the only song with a country beat I ever heard either band play.
When the psychedlic era arrived (quite late) to Yakima in late 1967-68, the band played some of those hits, like Sgt. Pepper and Count Five and the Psychotics. But the hippie era signaled the end of the dance culture. With free love, nobody had to try to get a "dry-@#%$!" on the dance floor to "Sandy" by Danny & the Seniors.
Soon, Three Dog Night and similar bands were playing Yakima and most of the kids either went to The Eagle's Hall in Seattle to hear big names or bought records and zoned out. While Janis Joplin was huge in Seattle, Iron Butterfly and Vanilla Fudge were more popular in Yakima. The only place local bands played was the typical high school function. By 1975 there was no local band scene at all in Yakima. The local hotel bars usually imported some group from L.A. who played Proud Mary and Mandy with equal mediocrity. The Doobie Brothers typified the taste of Yakima during that era, as they still do.
In the early 70's I was friendly with Steve Friedson of the Kingsmen, who lived on Capitol Hill with Barry Curtis, who was about to marry Milton Katims daughter, I believe. Barry had gone to Eisenhower High in Yakima in the early 60's. Steve came from Portland and was a fencing aficionado.
Louie Louie is the national anthem.
Thanks again.

Comments: Colin sent this site to me, I was pretty surprised to see the Twich / Blind Date stuff. Great memories, but a few names are missing in the Twich archives...Two bass players who replaced Colin, the first was Norm Sawyer, and then Simon Williams. Also, I replaced Denis Blackman who was in the band at that time who's name wasn't mentioned.
I have been in a few bands since, I started "Rawhide & Lace" on Vancouver Island in 1991, then started Silverado Spurs" in late '95. Then I joined forces with my current partner, Gene "Gino" Cardoni as the "Reckless Duo" with whom are very busy playing every weekend for the past five years.
FYI, I started playing back in the 60's on the East Coast (Montreal)Had a 3 piece group "The Mynd" playing EXPO 67, then with "The Floyd Jones Group" and "The Pop's Merrilly" before moving to Vancouver in the early seventies.
Hope you can use whatever info you can to update Twich......
Thanks for your time and input into this, it is much appreciated.

The band lasted till the summer of 1967.I replaced Ron Ferrante as guitar player in September of '64.Just after that date we started recording and secured our contract. Comments: Hi -
Just found your site by looking for some old musical chums I played with for years around the PNW in different incarnations of the Daze of the Week. I started out as the drummer for the Crestmen in 63-65. Later, I played with a local band with members from Tacoma and University Place called "The Thornes." This was a high school band and we giged around Tacoma/Seattle and the penninsula at high school dances frat parties at UPS, PLU, UW,and the south sound area in Olympia, etc.In addition, i was recording at Audio in Seattle with Kerny at the helm, with members from the Daze of the Week and other assorted musicians. Later, we also recorded at Wiley Griffith Studio (if you could call it that) in Ruston. Bands (such as the Sonics) will remember the great acoustics complements of the egg cartons on the walls and ceiling. Anyway, thought I would drop you a note. All of those recordigs at Audio and Wiley's still exist as members of the Daze and another band called Sage still have them. I graduated from Wilson High School. Thanks.

The band was the first all back band to play the Olympic Hotel and various other places at that time. Cameo was a sale out in just about every club it performed. The District Tav, The Gallery, The Rainbow, The Red Lion Inn, it goes on and on. They were also thought to be the #1 R&B band of that time-by most club owners. The band consited of Guitar,Bass,Organ,Drums,Trumpet,Sax and Lead Vocals. The band broke up around 1974 but re-grouped later in California to continue on to be Cameo.Friday 10/26/2001 10:53:36pm
